So, you have the Conservatives destroying themselves from within and the Liberals taking way too many shirtless selfies while they burn through your tax dollars like there is no tomorrow.
There has never been a better time for a new and better political party in Canada, one that cares about ALL Canadians, not just a specific class of them.
The federal Conservatives these days are a textbook example of the political reality that if you stand for nothing, you’ll fall for anything.
The Tories are hurling themselves into the black hole of political irrelevancy by turning on each other and pretending to be Liberals.
The latest example is a bizarre brawl in the party over leadership contender Kellie Leitch’s logical proposal that immigrants to Canada should be screened for “anti-Canadian values”.
Not only has Interim Tory Leader Rona Ambrose condemned the idea — thus displaying bias in a leadership race in which she should be neutral — but fellow leadership contender Michael Chong has accused Leitch of “dog-whistle politics”.
In other words, he’s saying Leitch is trying to win the Conservative leadership by using code language to appeal to racists within the party who are anti-immigrant.
The phrase “dog whistle” politics is used routinely by left-wing politicians to attempt to delegitimize conservative views.
That Chong would use it to attack a fellow Conservative is not only disgraceful, but a depressing indication of how the party these days is suffering from the political equivalent of Stockholm Syndrome, in aping the views of Trudeau.
Suddenly, the Conservative party that insisted throughout last year’s election campaign that Muslim women who wear the niqab should have to remove it when taking the oath of citizenship because, in the words of then immigration minister Jason Kenney, when he introduced the policy in 2011: “It is a matter of deep principle that goes to the heart of our identity and our values of openness and equality”, has lost its mind.
Suddenly Conservatives are telling the majority of Canadians who agreed with that policy according to poll after poll during the election that (a) they were just kidding and (b) if they agree with what Conservatives told us they believed last year, then it’s because they’re anti-immigrant racists.
To understand the idiocy of this new position coming from Conservatives, consider the reverse of Leitch’s proposal.
That is, that the Canadian government should allow immigrants into the country even if their values — such as killing women and children who “dishonour” their families — are anti-Canadian.
How does a Conservative party that wants to be taken seriously as an alternative to Trudeau and the Liberals come up with a position this stupid?
How will trying to out-Liberal Trudeau on immigration serve the Conservative cause?
Trudeau, remember, condemned the previous Conservative government for telling immigrants that Canadians consider such things as honour killings and female genital mutilation barbaric.
That was so appalling that even Trudeau had to apologize for it under duress after the public outrage it caused.
Canada doesn’t need any more social justice warriors signalling to Canadians that we should show how virtuous we are by being politically correct and dangerously naive in our immigration policies. Trudeau and the Liberals have that constituency locked up.
Canadians looking for an alternative need a Conservative party with a spine.
